Neue Regierung - New Government

Neue Regierung

New Government

Maag is quite certain that henceforth he and Minetti will administer the government. At any hour of the day, without delay and above all without parliament, they—and only they—are in a position to enact laws that take immediate effect and to make appointments. Naturally he is the head of the government. Minetti, as his closest aid, has to ensure everything is done to the head of the government’s satisfaction. There are no department divisions in that he, as president, is responsible for financial and judicial matters, external relations, foreign and domestic national security—the hard currency as it were—while Minetti sees to education, social issues, public health, sports and culture, and immobilizing the minorities, etcetera. As he, Maag, is in charge, responsibility for every decision rests with him, and it isn’t much help that Minetti believes his unrestricted access to power, meaning to him, might change things.
With the same clear-sightedness he resolves to let the world take its present course for the time being. Fully conscious of his power, fortified by the wisdom already gained in his short time as head of the government, and determined to never lose touch with the people, he orders another cup of coffee and devotes himself fully to the newspaper.

Rote Ohren - Red Ears

Rote Ohren

Was fällt diesem pseudomilitärischen Schmierenkomödianten ein!

Red Ears

He’d never noticed the bluish-red coloring of Colonel Lelli’s right ear until now. A desperately sad look in his eyes, hands buried in the pockets of his tunic, the colonel stands atop a small commanding hill at a distance from his troops. Snow crystals catch on his eyebrows, on his mustache and side whiskers, and freeze instantly.
Just as Maag is about to call out his warning against the dangers of catching frostbite he realizes Lelli is talking about him. And with Rita! What was this pseudomilitary ham-acting joker thinking!
Suddenly, as if behind the counter a switch had been hit, the ears of all those talking about others start blinking red like alarm signals (his own ears are, of course, burning); only Rita’s ears, which are exposed to invective of this sort day in and day out, retain their lovely color. Merriment, indeed an exuberance, overcomes Maag, for so many lights were now flashing in the café that he’s sorry not to be hearing the chorus of sounds accompanying his vision.
While his thoughts transform into cheerful melodies he discretely doubles his tip, and as he leaves the café hums so loudly that even Rita’s reproachful look no longer bothers him.
