Grosser Plan - Master Plan

Grosser Plan

Master Plan

In the top right garret, the one with the geraniums withering in the window, an old woman, her breathing labored, massages her legs with an antispasmodic; on the floor below, the cloth cover is lifted from a birdcage and a pair of parakeets awakens. One story down, a man having arrived home from the night shift pours himself a cup of coffee. In the apartment next door, Ana Bela Pinto stands in front of the mirror, removes a few hairs from her armpit with a pair of tweezers, and examines herself, wide-awake and with legitimate satisfaction. On the third floor another man, perhaps thinking of Ana Bela Pinto, forces himself on his wife because he dreamt she had been refusing him for months. In the apartment across the hall, with the coveted view of City Park, more dreams are dreamt: a ten-year-old girl thinks she can fly, stretches out her arms, and smiles blissfully. A woman on the ground floor stuffs work clothes into a washing machine, while in the adjacent apartment a sixty-year-old man mutters in his sleep “she did it again”—“what?” his wife in the bed next to his asks with a furry voice turning over to her other side and falling back asleep.
What an enticing idea, Maag thinks, to sit at a control panel and direct following a master plan. Even if it were only, just once, to arrive at an appointment on time. Although he is hopelessly late, he hastily throws on his jacket and leaves the building.

Concertino

Concertino

Concertino

The large round table in the club room of City Café is perfectly set: five plates, knives, forks, spoons, white wine glasses, bulbous red wine glasses, and—arranged accordingly—five people. Next to the spoon at each place setting, a cell phone. The guests, all very focused, rest their palms on the table. Is there a nervous excitement in the air? Will it go well?
And so it begins.
The first cell phone intones the sound of a blackbird, the second, the first bars of the national anthem, the third, a whistling tea kettle, the fourth the cooing of the proud mother’s newborn—a boy (20 in., 8 lbs. 2 oz.)—, and the fifth adds the clicking of a mechanical typewriter (Hermes Media 3) on which the same word, namely cock-a-doodle-do, is being typed with a carriage return bell after each syllable.
What an acoustic creation!
“Bravo!” In the adjoining room Maag switches off his phone. “Bravissimo!” He claps his hands enthusiastically and makes his way to his guests. What has impressed him the most at the premiere of his Concertino for Five Cell Phones, op. 1 is the discipline of the soloists, who are still seated exactly as they were the moment he left them, though now relaxed and smiling at one another.

Zentralpark, 16.00 Uhr - City Park, 4 p.m.

Zentralpark, 16.00 Uhr

City Park, 4 p.m.

Having lured the pigeons with breadcrumbs to his bench, Maag clasps his hands in front of his face. With that concentration that comes only with mental training, he achieves the equilibrium essential for his plan. Soon the pigeons are quietly positioned in a semicircle before him, waiting to see what will happen—something they’ll never discover, however, should his experiment be successful.
In approximately five minutes he’ll integrate the cocker spaniel, Aida, who’ll pass by his bench with the manageress of the Marriot Courtyard, into the half circle. The places to the left and right of the spaniel are reserved for the two Afghans who belong to the lady from uptown and who’ll be crossing the park a little later in the opposite direction. After that he’ll invite the squirrels, the brown as well as the shaggy gray ones, on to the branch of the Canadian maple outstretched above him. The insects—dragonflies, hornets, wasps, bees, horseflies, gnats—will then be assigned to the airspace between the squirrels and the ensemble on the ground. Each one of the sparrows from the flock that flies in from the Mews shortly before four is to select, at his command, a pigeon and alight on its head. At 3:57 p.m. he’ll gather together all the people present in the park behind the animals like a Greek chorus, in two sections and separated by sex. At his imaginary signal all will ease into song that will culminate in a splendid finale exactly at 4 o’clock. Afterwards each creature will resume its prior activity without ever remembering this interruption.
Only Willi—who has it in his head that he rules over this realm and complains that “regular” parks don’t have an easy go of it in these event-hungry times—will Maag not succeed in subjecting to his will. Should Willi be indulging in his afternoon coffee, as he is wont to do around this time, he ought to at least, for once, deign to see clearly, and with full possession of his faculties, what his park has to offer.

Sin

“He who sleeps does not sin!” Ana Bela shouts on her way out.
“I imagined that differently,” Maag says, disappointed.

Geschenkter Tag - Free Day

Geschenkter Tag

Free Day

It is a mild November morning and Maag intends to play Minetti. Full of curiosity, he leaves the building, though as he crosses the threshold he starts reeling and arrives on the sidewalk, to his disappointment, still as Maag. For reasons of pure common sense and not to tempt fate, he abandons his plan, secretly delighted to have a free day ahead of him.

Wolken - Clouds

Wolken

Was aber – weiss mans denn?

Clouds

Minetti observes the drifting clouds during his stroll. Every now and then he pauses. Curious, he traces with the tip of his walking stick the contours of cloudbirds of every genus and species, small cloudephants, flying cloudodiles, even a group of cloudelopes galloping off at great speed hunted by a cloudolion; and, way over to the right, above a high-rise and as if tethered to the PANASONIC roof advertisement, a cloudoceros, expelled from the herd and sad. He is aware that all his gesticulating is providing onlookers at some distance with a strange spectacle. What, however—do we know?—if these cloud creatures were likewise making observations? In this case, they would see a confused man, who, cast out in turn by his own herd, was trying in vain to catch hold of an invisible piece of air?
Caught, he withdraws his stick, watches once more as the sketchy contours of a cloud animal are on the verge of turning into something else, and stops short. Can it be that Maag could be in a position to manipulate clouds? For what was now emerging before him in the ever more cloudless sky amounted to the initial M in perfect English cursive.
“M for Maag,” mutters Minetti “Or does M stand for Minetti?” Warily he looks up and down the street, but it is empty.

Harte Probe - Sorely Tried

Harte Probe

Sorely Tried

For a long time now Minetti has been wanting to do Maag a good turn, but so far he hasn’t been able to think of anything that would be worthy of this aspiration. What friendship wouldn’t be sorely tried by this? If Minetti rushes off to City Park to feed the pigeons, he fears—although so far it has never happened—that Maag may already be there, sitting on his bench. If he has in mind straightening up Maag’s desk, something that would likely be desperately needed, no sooner does he have the idea than he drops it; how could he bear the humiliation of the desk having already been organized with the same care as he, Minetti, would have done for himself? Once Maag even had to anticipate him when he had wanted to shout Attention! in front of some books lined up in rank and file, although the books stood on the shelves with such a lack of discipline that they would be unlikely to ever comply with the order. Can one then speak of Maag as a friend if he doesn’t even afford Minetti the smallest opportunity to do him a good turn?
